I was so excited to be asked to create a style guide for Equality Now’s social media graphics. The template suite needed to be flexible enough to cover virtually all of the charity’s social media posts, messages from supporters, legal announcments, infographics, quotes,

The Handmaid’s Tale & The Testaments crossover with Equality Now

The dystopian world created by Margaret Atwood perfectly identifies many of the very real abuses and crimes against women in society. Equality Now partnered with Hulu to promote the third and fourth series and tie-in with the launch of the follow-up novel ‘The Testaments’ in September 2019.

I was asked to create a look and feel for these campaigns, how they will be presented on social media and to create a suite of templates to create further content for all social channels.

We want to live in a world where every woman and girl can make her voice heard. In 2016, millions of people around the world joined together for the first Women's March and declared #WomensRightsAreHumanRights. Today, more than half of Americans report having been politically active on social media in the past year and young women in the United States are more likely to be politically engaged than their male counterparts. For Moira, that passion and energy is central to how she views the world. In season one, Moira and June run for their lives when police begin shooting at protesters during a march for women's rights Moira helps organize. Moira's determination to resist the patriarchy is a testament to the public and private resolve of so many women everyday. It’s impossible to protect women and girls from sexual violence without comprehensive and effective laws in place. Sexual violence is a pillar of Equality Now’s work around the globe. Working together with our regional partners, we continue to bring survivors’ stories to the forefront of our work. In front of legislative bodies, we advocate for protections against forced pregnancy and forced motherhood and call for the elimination of laws around the world that provide loopholes for perpetrators of sexual violence. In #Gilead, Commanders are not held accountable for acts of sexual violence, such as raping their Handmaids. Too often, perpetrators of sexual violence across the world are not held accountable because of gaps in the law. In #India, marital rape is not a crime when the wife is over 18, and girls between the ages of 15 and 18 have only been protected by law since October 2017. In #Iraq, women like Sabiha are often forced to marry the men who rape them. Their rapists not only escape punishment for the initial crime, they are then given free rein to subject these survivors to further violence. The woman or girl's family may be the ones insisting she marry her rapist in order to restore the family's 'honor'. As in Gilead, some men in India, Iraq, and all around the world enjoy impunity when committing acts of sexual violence. Happy #constitutionday! Fun fact: did you know that women are not fully protected in the US Constitution yet?
