branding: Whippet Snippets
Last April I ran a competition for a FREE branding project (I know, so generous.) The competition was part of Snap Photography Festival’s '7 Days of Snap' give away. If you would like to see my work with Snap please check out my page here.
The lucky winner was Kerry, a hugely talented photographer based in Sussex. She has two photography businesses: Boo Face Photography for family, child and lifestyle portraiture and Whippet Snippets for capturing the moments of our most loyal and normally four-legged companions.
Sensing that there was more room for growth in the pet photography market, Whippet Snippets was the focus of our branding project.
The primary focus of Whippet Snippets is dog photography, so dogs were the biggest inspiration for the brand. I wanted to strike a balance between presenting a professional company and keeping a little of the fun and chaos of dogs and dog ownership.
Inspired by Kerry's images I decided to base this brand around nature and the outdoors. More specifically a beach theme; sand, drift wood, distressed paint and mucky paw prints and sandy fur.
The main logo mark was based around this beautiful illustration by Abby Cook. It was really important that the type compliment the illustration, so I went with this rough, flowing hand-drawn typeface with paint texture inset.
I wanted something that would not look out of place when overprinted on to rough textures like driftwood, or embossed onto thick paper.
The extra brand items expand on the theme and incorporate the outdoor textures as background patterns. The secondary font is a big contrast to the rough and natural style, I wanted something serif and with a nod to fashion and higher end brands. Didot gave the right feeling and is used in upper/lower cases and italics.
Kerry wanted vouchers deigned that could be purchased and given as gifts. It seems we both love a good pun, and I love using a bit of humour to get people interested a product. These were supplied as photoshop templates which can be edited with new text and images as suits the business.
The Whippet Snippets website is still in construction. It will be based around one of FloThemes templates: Rebecca. This is a great theme for presenting photography, with big, image-based gallery buttons.
